Have you ever considered a weekend getaway to Beautiful Cape Breton Island in Atlantic Canada? This blog post intends to give you many reasons to put it on the top of your travel plans.
Our trip started out at the Hilton Garden Inn Halifax Airport. It was really nothing special. Basically your run of the mill airport hotel. But it was a roof over our head and comfy place to lay our heads after a rather short flight from Toronto Pearson Airport that arrived at midnight and picking up our car at Budget. Which turned out to be a white Dodge Charger. Yowza!

Peggy’s Cove
With neither of us having visited Peggy’s Cove before, it was rather exciting for both of us. And since it was my Birthday weekend, it was my choice to make this our first stop on our 4 day weekend.
We’ve seen many posts on social media about Peggy’s Cove, and it didn’t disappoint.
We even stayed off the black rocks.
If you don’t know, the black rocks are extremely treacherous. Even if it looks like the ocean is calm, a rogue wave can come roaring in and that will be the end of you. So stay off the black rocks, please.
I got some really good drone footage here. You can watch this on The Still Life Edit YouTube page.
It was an extremely calming experience, in spite of the crowds. Which really weren’t that large.
We got a few souvenirs, got some hot chocolate and walked through a few shops. It really was a great experience. Put this place on your bucket list for sure.

The drive to our Airbnb was pretty uneventful. We chose a route that we thought would provide us with the most scenic drive. It definitely did as we got merged onto Cape Breton Island.
Swiss Air Memorial
As were driving across the island, we passed a spot where people seemed to be pulling over and parking. So of course, we followed suit.
This was the first place I put my drone up. There’s some really interesting landscape here.
It was a very picturesque location. Unbeknownst to us, it was a memorial to the passengers of the Swiss Air crash many years ago. I hadn’t heard of this plane crash before, and it even bothers me a little bit to speak about it.
We paid our respects and moved on.
Salt Water House
Our Airbnb was amazing. It’s called Salt Water House on Airbnb. If you’re planning a stay on Cape Breton Island, do yourself a favour and book a couple of nights here.
It’s located in or near the town of Inverness, which also has a pretty amazing beach, which you may have already seen on Instagram.
This was our first time staying in a Tiny Home. I’ve seen these before in IG posts and couldn’t imagine staying in one. Now, we can’t imagine ourselves not staying in one. It has everything you need, in a compact space.
The view of the Gulf of St. Lawrence was amazing. Sunsets were amazing. The coffee was amazing. Maybe a few a ticks, but they could have come from anywhere. And where can you go that there aren’t ticks. Nowhere.

Speaking of Inverness, on my birthday we had a pretty amazing breakfast at Coal Miner’s Cafe
The service was a little slow, I’m pretty sure the waitress forgot about us. So we ended up spending a little more time than then we wanted to, considering our plan was to start our trip on the Cabot Trail. But they get a pass because the food was great. They even serve fired Bologna, who does that? The Coal Miner’s Cafe, that’s who.

The Cabot Trail
They say this stretch of road within the Cape Breton Highlands National part is on par with The Ice Fields Parkway. We’re not sure it’s fair to compare the 2. Though it is debatable. They’re both amazing and offer awesome views that are not to be missed, but they’re different.
Oddly enough, I think they’re the same length, not including the scores of pullouts on both that you need to see. We just wish the pull-outs in the Cabot Trail were named, like they are on the Ice Fields Parkway.
We hit up as many of these pull-outs as we could. And this is where I got most of my best drone footage. You can see that here.
The Rusty Anchor
After our whale watching excursion with Capt Mark’s Whale and Seal Cruise, we stopped in at The Rusty Anchor for lunch. This was our first time eating Nova Scotial lobster and it didn’t disappoint.
Sher had the Lobster Poutine, and I had the Lobster Roll. Both had more than adequate amounts of butter that made the meal so mouthwatering. Incidentally, this was my first time eating Poutine of any kind. I’m glad it happened in Nova Scotia.

Capt. Marks Whale and Seal Tour
This was a first to both of us. We weren’t really sure what to expect, but naturally we were hoping to see a whale or two. Well, we saw one whale and a bunch of seals. No bald eagles though, even though they mentioned we might see a few.
Overall it was a really fun experience. A PSA though, if you have back or neck problems, this isn’t for you. It was a windy day, and the when the Zodiac drives into the wind, you’re in for a bumpy ride.
I didn’t get any images of the whale or seal that are worth sharing, so you’ll need to use your imagination I guess.
Our Weekend Getaway to Beautiful Cape Breton Island
I’m sure I’ve left somethings out. Needless to say we quite enjoyed our trip to Nova Scotia and will possibly go back.
Be prepared for a lot driving if you choose this trip on the Cabot Trail. But it’s worth it, and not “highly overrated” as someone told me on TikTik.
This was our Weekend Getaway to Beautiful Cape Breton Island.
Until next time…
